*That can help over time and you know, you have to have a little bit of a background in this to know what’s in-tune and what’s out of tune, but really, this is a process of listening to the vocal and trying to identify which parts sound out of tune and then making those adjustments manually. So let’s take a listen again.
*If you use an auto-tune plugin, then you probably spoil the rest of your vocal performance! Auto-tune is more useful for an instrument that has no continuing pitch changes like vocals, because there it is more straight forward.
In this Audition tutorial, I’ll use a vocal track I put together using lyrics inspired by some YouTube song I saw a while ago that used Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” song as a backing track. Here we’ll explore how to get the right scale and key for your vocals and even touch on the very unknown “Calibration A4” option in the auto pitch correction feature that Audition offers us.

*Go to 9.473 on the timeline and trim up the music track and but both vocal and music tracks to the first frame (turn on snapping if needed)
*This effect can be applied to the Effect rack in the Multitrack environment or applied directly to a piece of audio.
*Chromatic scale = Audition doing its best to guess which scale this is.
*Use higher attack and sensitivity for more of a pop or hip-hop vocal type of effect that you hear so often these days. Pretty cool.
*Go with Major C, 10–200, still sound bad so change the Calibration A45 to 410Hz instead of 440HZ.
*Knowing my vocal and audio limitations, it’s a good bet that I’ve messed something up because 410 sounds way better than 440 in my case. Your project may be different.
*Add Studio Reverb to the track as well. Choose Vocal Reverb (large) preset and let it ride.

Auto-Tune has become ubiquitous with modern music production, and is used on everything from vocals that need help to synth pop instrumental hooks. In order to get the most out of Auto-Tune, you’ll need to have a bit of music theory background, and some patience. Here’s how to get started with Auto-Tune from square one.
Know the Song, Know the Key.
In order to use Auto-Tune, you’ll first have to have an idea of the song and key. Auto-Tune does what it’s told, so you need to ‘tell it’ which notes belong and which notes don’t. Antares does make a helper app called ‘auto key’ which can help with this process if you don’t have the ear or music theory skills to know by listening, but nothing (yet) can really fully substitute simply knowing the song and knowing what notes the vocalist is singing.
Think about it. Even if the song is in the key of C, are there any times where the vocalist is supposed to drift away from that key? Is there a key change? Perhaps a dominant seventh chord that forces your singer to need a Bb instead of a B? These things are all important, because if you ‘tell’ Auto-Tune that the song is in C, notes outside of that key will be ‘corrected’ even if you don’t want them to be. To start, find a song or create a quick project that has a vocal line that stays in one key the entire time. Load up Auto-Tune as a plugin on that track, and choose the key the vocal should be in at the top of the screen under ‘Key’ and ‘Scale’. Once you’ve done that, you’re done with the most basic part. Auto-Tune will now make sure there are no notes outside of that key. You can adjust a few controls to allow for a more human feel and avoid the ‘obvious sound’ of Auto-Tune if you like (or adjust them to the extreme if you’re seeking the obvious sound of Auto-Tune).
Retune speed deals with ‘how fast should I fix the note?’ If your vocalist does a few short slides, or you want to allow for some natural variance before the singer ‘settles into’ the pitch, set a slower retune speed. Flex Tune lets you decide how much pitch deviation there actually is. For a robotic sound, don’t allow ANY deviation. For a more natural sound, loosen the reins a bit! The Humanize feature will attempt to mop up any artifacts when Auto-Tune is making adjustments at a faster speed. Rich homie quan walk thru. Finally, the Natural Vibrato control lets you adjust how much vibrato should be allowed (as vibrato can be a bit of an obvious fluctuation in pitch).
You can switch to advanced few in the upper left corner and ‘single out’ notes on the keyboard if the scale you want isn’t represented. You can also do this if you need to account for a single accidental (if the singer is in one key, but there’s a single chord change that adds one extra note that normally doesn’t belong). I use that often if I don’t want to go into graph mode and specify pitch correction manually for a single note.Getting Your Hands Dirty

What is iLok?
An iLok is a portable USB device used for storing software authorizations. When attached to your computer, the licenses on the iLok device are detected by the iZotope software.

Why Use iLok?
As opposed to the normal method of storing iZotope authorizations on the computer itself, using iLok lets users authorize iZotope software on any computer, as long as their iLok device is inserted and the iLok License Manager software is installed.
This can be handy for users who do their work on multiple computers in different studios/environments, as opposed to working on a single personal computer.
What is an iLok ID?
To use iLok authorization you must have an iLok ID, a unique username that is associated with your iLok account. This is the same as the username you use to log into iLok’s website and the iLok License Manager software.
If you do not already have an iLok account set up, visit iLok.com to create one.
Note: your iLok ID is not the same as the serial number on the iLok device itself.
What If I Don’t Have An iLok?
An iLok is not required to successfully authorize your iZotope products. To authorize via challenge/response simply input your product serial number, name, and iZotope registered email into the authorization wizard.

In fact, it wasn’t until Sims 3 when some careers started having the option for your sim to work on a specific lot. And you still needed to have them do tasks yourself because they were part of career expansions.
However with this mod you’ll be able to have your sims go to a specific lot and have them do tasks in the time that they should be working.
Let’s say, for example, that your sim is a chef.
You can assign any given lot as their location of work and have them go there to do activities during the time that they’re at work.
Instead of going to a rabbit hole, your sim will then go to the selected lot and do any specific number of activities before they go home.
They might even slack off there which would be unfortunate. But hey, at least you’ll see what they’re doing and they won’t be just disappearing into a virtual car to go nowhere. 22. More Traits For All Ages
This mod allows sims to have many more traits than the game allows by default.
As such you’ll be able to have your sims earn more traits as time goes on.
For example, sims that age up will automatically receive new traits even if you’re not controlling them.
This makes the entire game experience much more interesting by giving more personality to every sim in the world you inhabit.
Many sims often feel bland, but this mod changes that completely.
Just be very sure that you want this mod installed on your file before saving, though.
You cannot revert any trait changes by simply removing the mod. Even after removing the mod, Sims will remain with the traits and you might need to remove them manually using console commands. Test this out on a new save file if you wanna be extra careful.21. No Intro Mod
Even though this mod is quite simple and doesn’t really add a lot to the game, many people find it extremely annoying having to wait such a long time to get the game started.
One of the main issues that many Sims games have had(when it comes to basic issues and not bugs) is that intros are way too long and people just want to jump straight into the action. This is true for most video games, but the Sims loves their intro screens.
This is a judgment error from EA but hey, I think we’re all used to those.
Thankfully the No Intro mod allows you to jump straight into the action without having to wait or watch any intro video when you first boot up the game.
Don’t let your sims wait around – install this mod and start living their life as soon as the game boots up. Regions won’t have any intro videos and you’ll be able to play as soon as you select them.20. Traveler Mod
The Traveler mod is the best mod that you can download if you like to have your sims constantly moving from one town to another.
This free mod makes it so that whenever you move a sim from one place to another on any other map, they will not lose any of the relationships the they have.
One of the worst things that you can have happening to a legacy save is losing all of the progress you’ve made with a sim because you want them to move elsewhere.
This is great for people who like to play long legacy saves and have their sims move to different locations over time.
Now the mod does edit the way things work inside the files, so if you have any other mod that greatly alters the base game file it may clash with this one and neither will work. Proceed with caution if you’re big into modding.19. Tagger
The Sims 3 has the biggest maps of any Sims game, because plots don’t load individually but the map stays loaded at all times when you play.
This is amazing as it makes gameplay feel much more realistic. But it does present one key problem: it becomes incredibly difficult to locate things, people, and houses.
That’s why the Tagger mod was created – it allows you to tag stuff much better than you can do in the base game.
One of the main problems of the vanilla tag system is that you can’t really create custom tags and the criteria that the game uses isn’t as effective.
This mod completely overhauls the original system and makes it far more user friendly. You can create custom tags and the selection becomes much more dynamic when the entire map is in motion.
Another great thing about this mod is how amazingly compatible it is.
Tagger works well with every other mod. And it even works well in custom maps too.
You can download modded maps and use the mod to your heart’s content – you’ll be able to tag whichever you like on maps that aren’t even included in the base Sims 3 game!18. WoohooerSims 3 Monster Under Bed Frame
Woohooer allows you to take a much more liberal approach to dating and relationships than EA allowed in the original game.
With the Woohooer mod you’ll be able to have teenage sims get pregnant, and even male sims will be able to become pregnant as well. This is kind of an anything goes situation.
This mod goes well with the Kinky World add-on too, and modders recommend using them together for a true and more realistic Sims 3 experience.
Woohooer works well as a stand-alone too but you’ll need to download special clothing for teenage and male sims that become pregnant, as the base game’s clothes aren’t made for these things to work well.17. The Sims 1 Music
Here’s a really cool one for you old school gamers.
This mod simply replaces all of the default Sims 3 music with songs from the original Sims 1 soundtrack.
I feel like this was made for everyone who played The Sims back in the day, back when there was no sequels so it was just called “The Sims”.
I’m sure it’ll help help you reminisce of the good old times of classic BGM songs from The sims without having to go back to playing the (somewhat outdated) older games.

When the Sims 3 was made and the last patch was released, there still weren’t many of the current modern GPUs in the market.

Kinky World is the best mod for people looking for a realistic and mature Sims experience. It adds & amplifies that one element that is missing from most Sims games: sex. 3. Story Progression Mod
I’ll be the first to admit that the story progression implemented by EA in The Sims 3 is just not good enough.
This has been a recurrent issue in many Sims games (especially the third and fourth installations, which are the most complex of the bunch).
However in Sims 3 story progression was particularly bland.
This mod aims to change all that by altering the way characters interact with each other and how NPCs behave. This really does make gameplay much better and way more entertaining in long saves.
The mod was created to work in all versions of The Sims 3 so you can run this anywhere.

The Pixel 4 arrived on the market as one of the most leaked, most talked about smartphones of 2019. This year, Google seems like it is really trying to find something unique to offer, with new features like the Google-developed ’Motion Sense’ radar gesture system, face unlock, a 90Hz display, the next-gen Google Assistant, and a new astrophotography mode.
At the prices Google is asking, though, the Pixel 4 is hard to recommend. The company saddled the phone with an ultra-premium price tag, but the Pixel 4 can’t compete with ultra-premium phones. The phone falls down on a lot of the basics, like battery life, storage speed, design, and more. The new additions like face unlock and Motion Sense just don’t work well. It seems like Google just cut too many corners this year.
The strongest feature of the Pixel line—the camera—hasn’t really gotten better, either. The camera sensor is the same as last year, and the big new software feature, astrophotography mode, is also available on older Pixel devices and the much cheaper Pixel 3a.
The Pixel 4 isn’t bad in a vacuum, but the rest of Google’s Android competition gets better every year, while Google stands still. This year, Google turned in a weak, timid update to its flagship smartphone, and I’m not sure who to recommend this to at $800 or $900. Google just can’t do premium right. So, when can we have the Nexus line back?

We’ll start with the best part of the Pixel 4: the back. The Pixel 4 is, as usual, a glass and aluminum sandwich, with a Gorilla Glass 5 front, an aluminum frame exposed along the sides, and a glass back. When we talk about the rear design of the Pixel 4, note that between the three available colors, there are two totally different finish options that greatly affect the feel of the device.
The black version has a standard glossy glass back that uses Gorilla Glass 5, and the black version feels like the usual slippery fingerprint magnet that all glass phones are. The white and orange colors use a different glass panel that isn’t Gorilla Glass, though, and these get a special soft-touch treatment. First, the new soft-touch backs can no longer be dented by a fingerprint, and they feel noticeably more durable than the soft-touch coating on the Pixel 3. Second, while the Pixel 3 coating tended to absorb and hold onto fingerprint grease, the Pixel 4 hides fingerprints very well. The soft-touch Pixel 4 back looks and feels clean all the time, and I’m not compelled to scrub it down with soap and water every five minutes like with the Pixel 3.
I’d rather we just not make phones out of glass at all, but if we have to, the soft-touch coating on the white and orange Pixel 4 really is the best in the market. The back provides an agreeable amount of grip that you don’t get with regular glass. It looks great, it stays clean, and it seems durable. This is one of the few parts of the Pixel 4 that is different and better than the competition, and I hope other manufacturers copy the soft-touch implementation here.
The entire back of the Pixel 4 is great, actually. This year, Google jumped on the multi-camera bandwagon and added a 16MP telephoto lens. The whole camera assembly—which includes an LED flash, microphone, and spectral/flicker sensor—now lives in a big black square tucked neatly into the corner of the phone. It’s a similar solution to the iPhone 11, but I daresay Google’s camera block looks better. In person the black interior does a good job of hiding the clutter of the camera hardware, which I think looks cleaner than the purposefully highlighted lenses of the iPhone 11. People love to imagine shapes in these camera assemblies, so if the iPhone 11 Pro camera block looks like a stovetop or fidget spinner, the Pixel 4 looks like a shocked robot or Pikachu face. Thanks to the black interior, though, the Pixel 4 is considerably more subtle about it.Advertisement
The black camera block provides a pleasing contrast to the white or orange backs, and the black ring around the perimeter of the phone ties it all together pleasantly. The back really is handsome. While the sides are eventually aluminum, you won’t be touching any bare metal when you hold the Pixel 4. The sides have what Google calls a ’matte finish hybrid coating,’ which just feels like a hard plastic shell. It doesn’t seem any grippier than anodized aluminum, so I’m not sure why Google bothered.
As usual, the front design for the Pixel line looks dated this year. The Pixel 4 has a sizable bezel only on the top of the device, which gives the phone a lopsided, top-heavy look. Most phones have aimed to reduce the bezels as much as possible, going for only a minimal camera blemish or, sometimes, no blemish at all. But not Google. The Pixel 4 design reminds me of the Galaxy S8, a phone that came out two years ago, and the stats back that up. The Pixel 4 has an 81.3% screen-to-bezel ratio, while the Galaxy S8 has a more efficient use of space, with an 83.6% screen-to-bezel ratio.
The top bezel might look like something from 2017, but it is being put to use, as Google is packing the top of the phone with sensors and features. Besides the normal 8MP selfie camera, earpiece, and ambient light/proximity sensor, there’s a whole system for 3D face unlock, which uses two IR cameras, an IR dot projector, and an IR flood illuminator. There’s also a Google-developed Soli radar sensor, which is used to detect air gestures above the phone as well as the user’s presence.
Among the biggest upgrades in the Pixel 4 this year is the addition of a 90Hz OLED display. Faster refresh-rate displays are quickly becoming the new trend in smartphone design, with Razer, Asus, OnePlus, and a few other Chinese brands getting in on the action. We loved the 90Hz displays on the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T, where the higher refresh rate and FPS made scrolling, animations, and navigation feel buttery smooth.
If we were huge fans of the OnePlus’ 90Hz display, then we have to be huge fans of Google’s 90Hz display, right? Well, not so much, as Google’s 90Hz display doesn’t run at 90Hz all the time. Like many new features on the Pixel 4, the 90Hz display sounds good on paper, but in reality, it comes with myriad gotchas.
Not running in 90Hz all the time is justifiable in some cases. If you’re running a full-screen video at 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps, a 90Hz refresh rate won’t do anything other than burn battery. Some games are not compatible with 90Hz, so limiting the display there is appropriate, too. The Pixel 4 goes much further than this, though, and turns off 90Hz any time you use Google Maps, Waze, WhatsApp, and Pokémon Go. Pokémon Go is a game that is limited to 30fps, so that’s fine. WhatsApp was blacklisted by Google ’due to poor performance under 90hz’ according to an Android commit. Google Maps and Waze, Google’s two mapping apps, don’t really have an explanation attached as to why they are limited to 60fps on the Pixel 4. We can only assume it’s because Waze and Maps are already battery-heavy apps, and Google is worried about the Pixel 4’s battery life.
The second big refresh rate issue is that the 90Hz mode is tied to the phone’s... brightness? Shortly after the phone hit the market, users discovered that, depending on the ambient light, the Pixel 4 would run in 90Hz mode when above 75% brightness and drop to 60Hz when below 75%. Google PR responded to this discovery, saying the behavior was ’preserving battery when higher refresh rates are not critical.’ XDA did some digging and found the Android source commit for this behavior, which explains that ’Due to [a] hardware limitation, flickers are seen when switching between 60 and 90Hz at low display and ambient brightness.’ Apparently any time you’re in the dark, switching from 60 to 90Hz mode would be noticeable, so Google turns off 90Hz mode completely.Advertisement
You can opt out of Google’s 90Hz shenanigans by digging into the hidden-by-default developer settings, which you can access after entering Android’s version of the Konami code (go to Settings -> About Phone and tap on ’build number’ seven times). In here, you’ll find an option to ’Force 90Hz refresh rate’ all the time, which then makes the Pixel 4 work like every other 90Hz phone.
With this developer checkbox on, the Pixel 4 matches the buttery smooth performance we’ve seen from other 90Hz phones: the animations, scrolling, and transitions are all faster and smoother feeling. With this checkbox off, eh, it’s a crap shoot. The Pixel 4’s brightness and ambient light requirements for the 90Hz mode are very high, and this seems to require bright overhead light. Just keeping the display on and wandering around my house in the daytime is enough to have it ping-pong between 60 and 90Hz. The very brightly lit bathroom with the overhead lights? That’s good enough for 90Hz. The moderately lit bedroom with the lamp in the corner and light coming through the window? That’s going to drop to 60Hz. Even just something like my head casting a shadow over the light sensor from an overhead light is enough to have it drop to 60Hz.
You know how auto brightness is totally crazy and unreliable? Now imagine that technology being used to control the refresh rate of your device. It is just all over the place based on the tiniest light fluctuations. You won’t necessarily notice every drop from 90Hz to 60Hz, but the end result is that it happens so frequently that the Pixel 4 doesn’t feel as fast or fluid as other 90Hz phones in the default mode. It really is detrimental to the experience. It’s great that you can turn all these half-measures off, but the overwhelming message from Google is that its 90Hz phone doesn’t have a big enough battery to support 90Hz mode all the time.Google Pixel 1 Review

The display on the Pixel 4 XL looks great in indoor lighting, but it’s not very bright, and you might have issues in sunlight. There’s actually a hidden high-brightness mode that was recently discovered by XDA. The display has a sunlight mode, but Google chose not to expose it to users. I would guess this is because it would use a ton of the device’s limited battery.
This year the Pixel 4 supports ’Ambient EQ,’ a display white balance adjustment that changes based on the surrounding light. It’s basically the Google version of Apple’s True Tone. Ambient EQ previously appeared on the Google Home Hub, which came with a special hardware color sensor and aggressive automatic brightness and white balance controls. I was a big fan of the Home Hub implementation, which was so aggressive that it allowed the display to blend into the environment, completely removing the glaring, blasting light that normally comes out of a display panel. The Pixel 4 doesn’t have the special color sensor and only lightly tweaks the display based on the surrounding light. It’s subtle enough that it doesn’t make a huge difference, and I could take it or leave it. I’m still very interested in seeing what a Home Hub-style implementation would look like on a smartphone, though.

In the introduction to the second volume of New Testament Apocrypha, Tony Burke observes the number of documents that can be called “Christian Apocrypha” is quite high. In 1992 Clavis apocryphorum Novi Testameni listed 346 texts, but there were omissions and new discoveries increase that number. This volume includes twenty-nine translations of non-canonical Christian writings with introductions and notes.
The apocrypha is just one aspect of that study (see specifically the last section of that article). The main point to remember (as discussed in our article about the preservation of the Bible) is that the books of the Bible which we have, and which we all agree are from God, promise that God intended for the Bible to completely reveal His will. The Common English Bible is a translation of the scriptures intended to be a comfortable reading level for over half of all English readers. It attempts to substitute more traditional biblical terminology with more natural wording. Good News Translation w/ Apocrypha. The whole of the Apocrypha may with more than average certainty be said to have been written some time between 200 BC and 100 AD. It will be seen that it is an inaccurate assumption that the Apocrypha was in all its parts of later date than the latest parts of the Old Testament. Apocrypha, (from Greek apokryptein, “to hide away”), in biblical literature, works outside an accepted canon of scripture. The history of the term’s usage indicates that it referred to a body of esoteric writings that were at first prized, later tolerated, and finally excluded.
Prior to the first volume in this series the standard collection of Christian noncanonical Christian literature was The New Testament Apocrypha edited by M. R. James in 1924, updated as Wilhelm Schneemelcher, New Testament Apocrypha (Vol. 1: Gospels and Related Writings; Vol. 2: Writings Relating to the Apostles Apocalypses). This volume collected many the major noncanonical works, including some Gnostic literature. New Testament Apocrypha volume 2 continues the project of collecting texts not already found in Schneemelcher.
The introduction for each document in the collection begins with a summary of the contents followed by a list of available manuscripts, versions and editions. Most introductions have a few paragraphs on genre and structure as well as original language, date and provenance. Some introductions place the document into a historical context or comment on potential literary sources. Finally, each introduction includes translation notes and bibliography.
Part one gathers gospels and related traditions of New Testament figures. Traditionally any document concerning Jesus, or the plot of the gospels is called a “gospel.” The titles given to these new apocryphal stories resist that temptation. Thankfully, The Adoration of the Magi is not given the title, “The Gospel of the Magi.”

There are several highlights here. The Adoration of the Magi is only extant in a form of Old Turkic known as Old Uyghur, discovered in Turfan, brought to Berlin, moved to Moscow after World War II and subsequently lost. A clear copy was made of the four pages which make up this short story. The infant Jesus speaks to the magi when they offer their gifts and breaks off a chunk of stone from his cradle “like breaking off bread” and gives it to them. The stone is too heavy for them to carry, and their horse is unable to carried either. The manage to throw the stone in a well, and a great sign appeared in the sky. They realize the stone was a jewel. but they were not worthy. At this point, an angel appears, and they do not return to King Herod. The text breaks off after Herod kills the priest Zechariah (cf. Prot. James 23-24) and realizes the Magi have left.
There are two accounts of intriguing persons in the Gospels, The Life of Judas and The Life of Mary Magdalene. The Life of Judas is a medieval Latin text, although also extant in Greek and Armenian. Translations of the Latin and Armenian texts appear in this volume. Judas’s father was warned in a dream his son would eventually kill him, so when Judas was born, his father pierced the child’s legs and threw him in some bushes. He was rescued by some shepherds and raised by a woman named Scariot. As an adult Judas served king Herod, and when to a field to gather fruit for the king. Judas kills owner of the field in order to take his fruit, naturally this is Judas’s father. Herod protects him from revenge and the king counsels him to marry the dead man’s wife. So Judas killed his father and marries his mother. His mother sees the scars on his legs and realizes Judas is her son, both realize they have committed a great wickedness.
The Life of Mary Magdalene is a Byzantine text which describes Mary as a beautiful, wealthy woman prior to meeting Jesus rather than a prostitute. According to this tale, she is the woman was troubled by seven demons until Jesus cast them out. She is the woman who anointed Jesus’s feet in Luke 7:38 and the first witness to the resurrection (John 20). After the ascension, Mary travels to Rome and accuses Pilate before the Emperor. Pilate is summoned to Rome, interrogated and jailed. While in jail outside of Rome, the emperor was hunting. He shot an arrow at a deer, missed, and struck Pilate in the heart. Mary then makes an evangelistic trip to Marseille, converts the town of idolaters and establishes a church there. She died in Ephesus, but her remains were transferred by Leo VI to Constantinople to the Monastery of Holy Lazarus.More Apocrypha Iiirejected Scriptures Fulfilled
Part two collects apocryphal Acts and related traditions. Traditionally Apocryphal Acts books are stories about the apostles or the apostolic circle.

The Acts of Peter in Azotus describes Peter’s encounter with the devil and a group of demons in Azotus, a location mentioned in Acts 8:40 in association with Philip the Evangelist. The devil appears as an archangel, but Peter sees through the disguise. The devil makes the sign of the cross and cries of to Christ. The devil confess is who he is in each of the seven demons introduce themselves. They are the demons of deception, sexual immorality, falsehood, adultery, avarice, and slander. The seventh is not associated with the vice, Syracuse is Peter and humans in general of sin. Peter binds the devil in the demons for seven days, during which time there was no sin on earth.
The most unusual story is The Acts of Thomas and His Wonderworking Skin. The story concerns the apostle Thomas is missionary work in India and provides two stories that are not found in the longer Acts of Thomas. The Greek text was originally edited by M. R. James in 1897 from a single British library manuscript. In1903 three additional manuscripts were discovered. The text is also extended Coptic, Arabic, Ethiopic, and church Slavonic. The translation published in this volume is from Tamilia, first appearing in 1903. Peter and Matthew accompany Thomas to India, where they speak to a man named Olbanus who is looking to buy a slave. Jesus suddenly appears and sells Thomas as a slave and he is eventually put to work building a palace for the king of India. He preaches the gospel to his master’s wife Arsinoë and she becomes a believer and destroys her idols. The devil enters the heart of husband Leucius and he tortures Thomas and flays him. Arsinoë is so upset by this she dies, but Thomas takes his skin, lays it over her dead body and she rises from the dead. His skin is involved in several other miracles before the Lord glues the skin back on Thomas’s body and he ascends to heaven to be gathered to the other apostles, Mary and Paul.
There is only one example of an epistle in part three of the volume, The Epistle of Pelagia, translated by Slavomír Čéplö. As Burke comments in the introduction to the volume, this is an epistle in name only since it was associated with the Acts of Paul when it was first published in 1904. The Epistle of Pelagia alludes to Thecla and includes the story of Paul baptizing a lion (ch. 2). This lion appears in chapter 6 when Paul is sent to the arena. After Paul and the lion pray and worship together, they are released. Pelagia is a daughter of a king who converts after hearing Paul’s preaching, divorces her husband and narrowly avoids martyrdom.
Part four follows the traditional practice of calling anything with Revelation-like visions an “apocalypse.”

Some of these are very brief: The Dialogue of the Revealer and John is barely two pages with extensive notes (but with twenty pages of introduction). Both second and third Apocryphal Apocalypse of John are presented to parallel columns comparing two often divergent traditions. For the third Apocryphal Apocalypse of John a third translation of the Church Slavonic version is included. In all three Apocryphal Apocalypse of John there is less apocalyptic that expected, they are mostly questions and answers on church life and practice.
In The Mysteries of John, John is taken from the Mount of Olives on a heavenly journey hosted by a cherub. John asks questions about what he sees *(the Garden of Eden, etc.) and the cherub gives an explanation. The book covers such diverse topics as agriculture and stars, to why humans have fingernails.
The Apocalypse of Thomas is known from Latin texts in three forms (long, short and abbreviated). Matthias Geigenfeind suggests the text may have developed in the context of Priscillian, an ascetic bishop from Avila (380-385). The longer form of the book includes thinly veiled predictions such as “Suddenly, near the last time a king will arise, a lover of the law. He will not rule for long. He will leave two sons. The first is named after the first letter, the second after the eighth. And the first will die before the second.” A footnote suggestions “Likely the king and his two sons are Theodosius I and the princes Arcadius and Honorius.” The text has a series of apocalyptic signs over eight days, culminating in the rapture-like deliverance of the elect: “Then that angel will be revealed who has power over the holy angels, and all the angels will go forth with him, sitting upon chariots of the clouds of my holy Father, rejoicing and flying in the air under heaven to deliver the elect who have believed in me.”
Finally, part five is entitled “Apostolic Orders,” a new category of New Testament Apocrypha. In his introduction to his new translation of The Teaching of the Apostles, Witold Witakowski suggests the work is apocryphal since it has a narrative framework based on biblical characters. The apostles gather in the upper room and lay out twenty-seven disciplinary and liturgical rules. Following these rules is a sketch of the spread of the Gospel and a list of locations the apostles and others traveled to preach. This list includes non-biblical characters like Addai who evangelized Edessa as well as biblical names such as Priscilla and Aquila, who received the writings of Luke the evangelist and followed Luke until his death. The twenty-seven canons decree Sunday worship as well as Wednesday services and prayers at the ninth hour on Friday. Presbyters are like Aaron’s priesthood and deacons are like the Levites. They declare the birth of Jesus should be celebrated on January 6, a forty day fast before the passion, and a feast for the ascension fifty days after the resurrection.
Conclusion. As Burke observes in his introduction to the volume, Christian apocrypha provides an insight into the diversity of early Christian beliefs. Some of this literature is Christian interpretation of canonical documents, some seek to associate current practice with the earliest apostolic community. This second volume of “More Noncanonical Scriptures” is a window into how the early church developed both in practice and in theology. New Testament Apocrypha series will continue to serve scholarship for years to come. I look forward to volume 3!
